Competing Priorities and Exercise

Competing Priorities: Reason #4 Why Moms Don’t Exercise as Much as We’d Like

When you pull out your planner, do you ever dream of cloning yourself in order to make it possible to get to all the things you have on you and your family’s schedule? You are in good company, my friend! Sometimes your schedule gets too overwhelming, and you must step back and re-evaluate your priorities. Even if you make time and space to do this, it can be difficult to follow through on living by your priorities. What if your priorities are competing against each other? What if you are a go-getter and have a LOT of things you would call priorities? What if something you don’t even classify as a priority somehow takes over your time and energy?

These are all very real concerns in our lives as mothers. This is why competing priorities is the fourth reason of ten that we will be talking about in this series of posts entitled:  top ten reasons why moms don’t exercise as much as we’d like.

Competing Priorities Definition:  competing ideas, requirements, or interests cannot all be right or satisfied at the same time.

In order to help you work through this barrier to exercise, I would like to offer you a set of questions you can ask yourself. You see, I already know that exercise is worthwhile as one of your top actions/behaviors in your priority for maintaining your health and well-being through daily self-care. And I think you do too, otherwise you probably wouldn’t be reading this, right?

So, grab a pen and a piece of paper so you can really embrace this and get to the heart of the matter. Write down what comes to mind first when you ask yourself these questions.

  • What are your top five priorities in your life?
  • How do these priorities relate to your strengths and values?
  • How do you ultimately want to feel in life?
  • How does having these as priorities contribute to your desire to feel how you want to feel?
  • What is taking up the most space on your schedule?
  • How does this contribute to your desire to feel how you want to feel?
  • What is taking up the most space in your mind?
  • How does this contribute to your desire to feel how you want to feel?
  • What tasks are you currently delegating?
  • How might you be able to start delegating more tasks?
  • Who can you ask for help?
  • What motivates you to keep exercise as a priority that is not overtaken by another priority?
  • When your plans to exercise don’t work out because of a competing priority, what is your Plan B?

If you have writer’s cramp, I am kind of sorry, but also, I applaud you for taking the time to mindfully consider these questions.

When you live a full, rich life, it is common to have competing priorities.

My challenge to you this week: Take the energy you spend on being overwhelmed and instead be grateful for the abundant life you have created for you and your family. When you feel like your plate is so full that it might overflow, know that self-care is the spoon that clears your plate and helps provide nourishment to your mind, body and spirit.

You are doing such a great job…you know that right? I am certain that if you honor yourself by regularly evaluating the course of your priorities and how they align with your strengths, values and behaviors, you will do great things!
